Employers want use Form W-2 Online,
Wage and Tax Statement, to report information about employees’ annual wages.
You must send a copy of Form W-2 to all employees. And, you are responsible for
sending a copy of the form to the Social Security Administration (SSA).
Form W-2 Online shows an employee’s gross wages and
the taxes you withheld from said wages. The form might also include other
information, such as tip income or health savings account contributions.
Form W-2 Online is a tax form that is used to file wages pay
to employees and the taxes withheld from those wages. Employers complete and e-file
the Form W-2 for each person that is in an employment relationship and on their
payroll. Form W-2 e-file is used to
report wages of employees and legal employees. This means that an employer
cannot use this form to report payroll tax for independent contractors or
freelancers providing services. In these cases, IRS Form
1099-NEC Online is used.
Don't confuse Form W-2 Filing with Form W-4, which is used by employees
to tell their employers how much tax they should withhold from each pay check
or pay period.
You must file a Form W-2 for all employees you paid
current tax year. This includes employees who no longer work for your business.
And, you must provide a standard W-2 form to any relative or family member you
employ.
Do not provide Form W-2 to any independent
contractors you paid during the year. A contractor is not considered an
employee of your business. Instead, you must distribute Form 1099 to any
applicable contractor.
